They cost more than a standard car and the boot is small, so they suit couples and short trips more than family holidays. Many local suppliers ask for only a small deposit, and some none at all. Plenty of cars can also be booked without a credit card - you simply leave the deposit in cash when you pick the car up.

Hidden fees and large deposit holds are the usual headaches. We flag the rates that let you pay on arrival with little or no deposit, so nothing big is blocked on your card. The range is wider than most people expect. A small hatchback for a week can cost around £80 in March but £250 or more in peak August - and on the Canaries or Mallorca, even higher.
The single biggest lever is timing: the same car on the same dates routinely costs twice as much if you leave it to the last week. Book in spring or October and Spain is genuinely cheap to drive.
The standard minimum is 21, though a few budget suppliers set it at 23 or 25 - check the car's terms before booking. Between 21 and 24, expect a young-driver surcharge on top of the daily rate.
There's no hard upper limit, but drivers over 70 may face an extra fee or be asked to confirm a clean record, so it's worth checking in advance.
At pick-up, the hire company freezes a security deposit on your credit card - the money isn't charged, just held until you return the car. The exact amount depends on the car class and cover level, and is shown on every listing before you book.
No credit card? Plenty of cars in the catalogue take a cash deposit at the desk instead, and some include full cover so nothing is held at all.
Both automatic and manual cars are available throughout the catalogue - you'll find a good choice of either at any major airport. Manual works out cheaper; automatics cost a little more.
In July and August automatics do book up early, so if that's what you need, filter for it and reserve as soon as your dates are set.
It depends on where you're going. Madrid, Barcelona and Seville have good public transport - a car in those cities costs you in parking and low-emission zone permits more than it saves.
Anywhere else, it's a different story. For the Costa del Sol, Andalucia's villages, the Pyrenees, or any of the islands, a car is what makes the trip work. On Tenerife or Mallorca especially, the best places simply aren't reachable without one.
Yes, but you need to declare it before you go - never just drive across without telling the hire company. For Portugal and France, most suppliers can add cross-border cover for a small daily fee, arranged at the desk when you collect the car.
Gibraltar is a different matter: it's a separate territory outside the EU and requires its own permit. Not all companies offer it, so if you're planning to visit, say so when you book rather than at pick-up.
At pick-up you'll need your passport, driving licence and booking voucher - the voucher can be shown straight from your phone. The licence must have been held for at least 2 years.
Visitors from outside the EU may also be asked for an International Driving Permit alongside their national licence. Some chains ask for it at the desk, others don't - safer to arrange one before you travel than to find out on arrival.
Yes. Set a different pick-up and drop-off location in the search and it becomes a one-way hire. Many routes across Spain have no one-way fee at all; others add a charge - either way, it's shown clearly before you book, so there are no surprises at the desk.
